We’ve just heard that the final vote on the EU clinical trials regulation has been moved up to 5.00 pm BST tomorrow, Wednesday. There’s still time to write to your MEP asking them to support the good measures on clinical trial transparency in it. You can find contact details for your MEP and sample letters here.
If passed, this new regulation would mean that all drug trials in the EU must be registered on the EU clinical trials database, a summary of results must be uploaded one year after the end of the trial, and the full clinical study reports must be uploaded if a medicine is submitted for marketing authorisation. Fines will be imposed on companies and researchers that do not meet these transparency requirements.
This legislation includes good transparency measures because of the hundreds of letters AllTrials supporters sent to MEPs and Health Ministers, and the hard work of some MEPs. Glenis Willmott MEP, who led the negotiations on the regulation, said today, “I hope all MEPs will support this huge step forward tomorrow, which will set the global gold standard in clinical trial transparency.”
We will be watching the vote tomorrow afternoon and will publish our reaction to it as soon as we can. Please get in touch with your own thoughts and comments or if you want to talk to any of the campaign team and supporters about it.
