King’s College London has become the second London university and third university in the UK to fully sign up to the AllTrials initiative.
The AllTrials campaign, launched in January 2013, calls for all clinical trials to be registered and their results reported. The campaign has published a detailed plan on how such trials can be registered and the results reported.
Departments and centres from a number of universities have joined the campaign, but King’s is only the second London university to sign up on behalf of the whole organisation.
Professor Sir Robert Lechler, Vice-Principal (Health) at King’s College London said: “King’s College London is delighted to support the AllTrials initiative and applauds the attention that has been drawn to the importance of ensuring that all clinical trial results are published. Inevitably, there will be historic unpublished trials conducted by most public sector organisations but King’s College London is strongly encouraging all investigators to register their clinical trials, and is committed to publishing results from all current and future clinical trials, irrespective of outcome.”
Professor Andrew Pickles, Director of the King’s Clinical Trials Unit, said: “I am delighted that the College is supporting this initiative, which should increase the information available to help us determine the best treatments and medicines to prescribe to patients. We will all benefit from the publication of all clinical trial results.”
Síle Lane, Director of Campaigns at Sense about Science, said: “We are pleased that King’s College London has joined AllTrials and is encouraging its researchers to ensure all their clinical trials are registered. Universities and institutions are going to have a huge role in helping and encouraging their researchers to be more transparent. We encourage all UK universities to follow the lead set by King’s, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Cardiff University and join the campaign.”
