The ‘file drawer’ problem of publication bias is more than academic: it affects the health and safety of patients throughout the world. Drugs have side effects, and those side effects can be serious. No one should ever take a drug because regulators inadequately understood the context for its research. We as a society owe it to patients to make the trade-off between benefits and risks as unbiased and well-informed as possible.
